David Levin the proprietor and chairman of the Capital Group created and designed his first hotel in 1971.
The Capital Hotel was one of a few hotels with a fine dining restaurant, serving excellent food for which it received a Michelin Star in 1973.
It was one of only three restaurants to be awarded a Michelin star. From 2003 the restaurant has achieved the distinction of two Michelin stars, which it has retained until today, and it remains the only hotel restaurant in London with this accolade. |
Many well known chefs launched their career at The Capital. Richard Shepherd, Brian Turner, Paul Merrett and Gary Rhodes, for which David Levin open the Greenhouse restaurant in Mayfair in 1977, also awarded a Michelin star.
L’Hotel opened in 1981 with 12 bedrooms followed by the Metro Bar & Brasserie in 1983. The People’s Palace restaurant in the Royal Festival Hall was managed by The Capital Group for 10 years.
In 2007 L’Hotel was re-launched as The Levin Hotel, designed in 1930’s style with up to the minute fabrics and lighting by William Yeoward, Designers Guild and Porta Romana.
David Levin further demonstrates his expert knowledge of the restaurant business with the opening of The London Bakery, which today produces breads and pastries for many of the top hotels and restaurants in and around London. Since 2004 following an extensive refurbishment The Capital Group manages 195 Piccadilly, the headquarters of BAFTA, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in London. His winery in the Loire Valley, France, where David and his team produce Sauvignon Blanc, Gamay and Rosé wine was launched in 2003. Today his wine is served in many of the finest restaurants around Europe and exported to the US, Canada and Australia.
During his years at the helm David Levin has received numerous awards for his hotels, restaurants and his wines. Subsequent accolades have included the highly prestigious Restaurateur of the year in 1991 and Hotelier of the year in 1994. David is also a visiting professor at Oxford Brookes University.
